According to an online poll of Afghans, at least 89 percent of people support reopening girls’ secondary schools. This online survey was conducted by a private Afghan TV called TOLO. 34100 people participated in the online survey which was shared on this TV’s official page for 24 hours.
Out of 34 thousand, 30,600 which make up 89 percent of the total participants supported the reopening of girls’ secondary schools.
This poll was conducted after the Taliban’s Minister of Education in Uruzgan province recently said that the majority of Afghan families do not want their daughters to go to school. He claimed that cultural issues are one of the main reasons for the closure of girls’ schools, despite the fact that not long ago, a number of female students in Paktia Province had protested when Taliban authorities closed their schools just days after classes reopened.
Education for both boys and girls beyond the sixth grade was suspended when the Taliban came to power in August 2021. They said that they need time to bring reforms in the school’s systems that reflect Islamic values and culture. however, On March 23 when schools resumed only males were allowed to return to school, while girls are still not allowed.
