The World Health Organization (WHO) marked World Health Day with a shocking report, stating that in Afghanistan, on average, one woman dies every two minutes during pregnancy or childbirth.
On Monday (April 7), the organization shared this alarming statistic on its X (formerly Twitter) page and called on international partners to provide targeted assistance to help ensure fair access to quality healthcare in Afghanistan.
The head of WHO’s health program in Afghanistan, emphasizing the need for a “healthy start and a hopeful future” for all, said that universal healthcare coverage—especially for women and children—is essential, as millions are in urgent need of care and support. He added that achieving this is not possible without effective health systems.
The World Health Organization also warned that the health crisis in Afghanistan is far-reaching. According to reports, every 10 seconds, a child in the country suffers from malnutrition.
