A female teacher in Herat has been arrested by the Taliban for teaching modern scientific subjects, local sources report.
Residents say she was taken into custody by agents of the so-called Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice at least two weeks ago and transferred to prison. Since then, her family has knocked on every door in search of her release, but Taliban officials have refused to respond.
Her story is just one among many. The arbitrary arrest of women and girls has become a grim routine under Taliban rule, leaving families desperate and entire communities living in fear.
Only three days ago, in western Kabul, Taliban agents detained another young woman and took her to an undisclosed location. Her neighbours described the arrest as brutal and senseless, sparking anger and outrage among ordinary citizens.
The Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has become the face of the Taliban’s war on women. Over the past years, it has enforced one misogynistic policy after another, stripping women of their rights, their freedom, and now, even the simple act of teaching or learning.
For the people of Afghanistan, and especially for women, every knock on the door could mean the end of a normal life.
