Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesman for the Taliban regime, announced in a statement on X that Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the group’s reclusive leader, has once again emphasized the implementation of Sharia law on citizens during a gathering in Kandahar.
According to the statement, the meeting was organized by the Taliban’s Ministry of Higher Education in Kandahar. The absentee leader described the Taliban system as an “Imamate Kubra” (the grand leadership of the Islamic community) and urged his followers to remain loyal to this system.
“The great objective of establishing an Islamic government,” Hibatullah said, “is to implement Sharia through proper Sharia courts and just rulings. Therefore, you must strive to gain full expertise in issuing fatwas and judicial matters in order to serve Muslims properly.”
The statement added that during this gathering, attended entirely by clerics, the Taliban leader also taught from a Hanafi jurisprudence book titled “Radd al-Muhtar ‘ala al-Durr al-Mukhta”.
Hibatullah further called on clerics to exercise “caution” when issuing fatwas and to spare no effort in defending the so-called Islamic system. According to him, “for centuries, the Islamic order had vanished from Muslim societies, but with the rise of the Taliban, it has now been restored.”
However, what Hibatullah describes as the “implementation of Sharia” in practice translates into torture, beatings, and harassment of citizens. Over the past several years, the Taliban have carried out numerous forms of violence against the people of Afghanistan.
The system he calls “Islamic” is in reality a deeply patriarchal and inhumane order that has shocked the world. Under this regime, women and girls, who make up half of the nation, are deprived of even the most basic human rights.
