Taliban Flog Eight People in Paktia Province

The Taliban court, in a statement, announced that officials of the group in Paktia province publicly flogged six individuals on charges of “theft, murder, and kidnapping,” and two others on charges of “extramarital relationships.”
In a statement released by the court today, Wednesday (December 18), it was mentioned that the Taliban’s military court in Paktia sentenced two of the accused to 10 years in prison and 39 lashes each, one accused to two years in prison and 39 lashes, three other accused to 39 lashes each, and the last two individuals to three years in prison and 39 lashes each.
The Taliban often invite other citizens to attend these flogging ceremonies. According to the Taliban, the presence of citizens at these events serves as a lesson for them.
However, the United Nations and human rights organizations have consistently criticized such acts of torture and corporal punishment by the Taliban, stating that these practices violate the human dignity of the accused.
These organizations have repeatedly called for an end to summary trials and corporal punishment in Afghanistan through their statements. On the other hand, the Taliban emphasize the enforcement of Islamic punishments and discretionary penalties.
In their statements, the Taliban court frequently uses the terms “criminal” and “accused,” but it remains unclear what the group means by these terms.
It is worth noting that the Taliban apply the same punishment to both “criminals” and “accused.” It seems that even the terms “criminal” and “accused” are not clearly defined within their framework.
