Local sources in Nangarhar province have confirmed that a 20-year-old woman took her own life by ingesting poison.
The incident took place on the morning of Monday, May 12, in the Kama district of Nangarhar. The exact reasons behind the suicide remain unclear, and Taliban officials in the province have not issued any public statements regarding the case.
Concerns are growing over the apparent rise in suicide cases in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. In just the past two weeks, at least three such incidents have been reported in the media.
Many women and girls in Afghanistan are grappling with deepening despair under the Taliban’s harsh restrictions. Since returning to power, the group’s reclusive leader has reportedly issued over 100 decrees curtailing the rights and freedoms of women.
These measures have severely limited women’s participation in public life and access to education, work, and healthcare. Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, previously described the situation as one in which Afghan women are effectively living under complete house arrest.
