Abida’s Tragedy: A Teenage Girl Sets Herself on Fire Over Forced Marriage

Local sources in Ghor province report that Abida, a teenage girl from the village of Darzab in Taywara district, has died after setting herself on fire. The incident reportedly occurred after she was pressured to marry a member of the Taliban — a marriage she refused.

Her death has once again brought attention to the ongoing issue of forced marriages in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

Users on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) responded to the incident by expressing concern and condemnation. Many described such forced marriages, abductions, and coercive relationships as violations of human rights and Islamic values.

One user, Golchehra Yaftali, wrote: “This is not an isolated incident, but part of a broader, intentional policy of gender-based oppression. We call on the international community and human rights organizations to take immediate action.”

This case adds to a growing number of reports in recent years involving p. to accept forced marriages throughout Afghanistan under Taliban authority.
