Amnesty International: Taliban Rule by Fear, Not Justice

Amnesty International’s South Asia office has condemned the Taliban’s judicial system, saying it is rooted in fear rather than justice.

In a post on X, the organization said that over the past four years the Taliban have entrenched and normalized injustice, citing testimonies from former prosecutors, lawyers, human rights defenders, and legal experts.

“When Afghans see people punished without trial, the message is clear: fear rules here, not justice,” an Afghan human rights advocate told Amnesty International.

A former prosecutor now living in exile added: “In the past, evidence and investigation had to justify every arrest. Today, under Taliban rule, people are detained for what they wear or what they say, and no one asks why.”

Amnesty International urged countries that support human rights to step up pressure on the Taliban and hold them accountable for their crimes. The organization warned that urgent international action is needed to address Afghanistan’s worsening human rights crisis and push for genuine justice.
