The Taliban regime’s Office for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice announced in its weekend report today (Thursday, February 26) that the group’s agents have arrested 16 people this week on charges of witchcraft
According to the Taliban, these individuals were arrested from Parwan, Bamyan, Kandahar, Badakhshan, Jowzjan, Ghor and Sar-e Pol provinces and then, according to the agency, they were transferred to their judicial institutions.
According to a report by the Taliban’s Office for the Promotion of Virtue, these individuals were arrested for “protecting the correct Islamic belief and preventing the promotion of acts contrary to Sharia” and this process is still ongoing.
Arbitrary arrests by Taliban agents this week show that the number of detainees has more than doubled compared to last week; seven people were arrested last week and a total of 39 people were arrested last month.
UN experts have previously stated in their reports that the Taliban’s arrests are arbitrary and extra-legal. According to them, the Taliban arrest people without a preliminary investigation and then carry out prison sentences. They believe that the lack of a codified constitution and an independent judiciary has emboldened this group.
