18 People Sentenced to Flogging in Kabul and Bamyan

The Taliban regime’s court announced on Tuesday (March 1) that members of this inhumane group have publicly flogged 18 people in Kabul and Bamyan provinces.

According to a statement by the group’s first instance court in Kabul, officials have physically tortured 17 people for “selling, smuggling, and using alcoholic beverages.”

The Taliban has sentenced the defendants to 9 months to 7 years of ta‘zir (discretionary) imprisonment and 10 to 39 lashes.

At the same time, the group has also announced the implementation of flogging on a defendant in Bamyan province. Officials of the ruling regime in Bamyan have said that they arrested the accused on charges of “theft” and then sentenced him to pay a fine, one year in prison, and 39 lashes.

Citizens have continuously criticized the Taliban’s practice of physical punishment, saying that the group first carries out flogging and imprisonment on the accused and then reviews their case.

On the other hand, the trial process carried out by the Taliban regime takes excessively long, and detainees suffer from depression and anxiety due to these delays.

Although the Taliban have not openly said anything about the mental state of the prisoners, published reports from prisoners indicate that some of them have attempted suicide.
