A report released by Human Rights Watch on Wednesday aril 27th shows that a number of girls’ secondary schools that were still open in Balkh and some other provinces are now threatened by the Taliban.
Human Rights Watch reports says “girls’ secondary schools have remained open since the Taliban took power. But open schools in Balkh and elsewhere have been threatened with closure if they refuse to comply with increasingly harsh dress codes”.
Meanwhile, the US Special Representative for Women in Afghanistan, Reina Amiri, announced her meeting with Lana Zaki Nasibeh, the UAE Representative to the United Nations.
She tweeted that Afghan women’s and girls’ rights were discussed. She also emphasized the role that the United Arab Emirates can play in improving women’s rights situation in Afghanistan. Rina Amiri had previously warned the Taliban that blocking schools for girls would not work well for the Taliban.
Girls’ schools in Afghanistan have been closed for more than eight months. After the fall of the previous government, the Taliban, in their first move, closed girls’ schools to female students above sixth grade.
According to political analysts, blocking girls’ education is one of the main reasons why the Taliban are not recognized in the world. They claim that the Taliban has a negative reputation around the world.
